Dennis Kay
Principal Conductor and
Musical Director
Born into a musical family, and being a fourth-generation Salvationist, it was no surprise when Dennis showed his love of music from a very early age.
Dennis started singing almost before he could walk, and by the age of six he was playing the tenor horn to a high standard. He played his first tenor horn solo at a packed Free Trade Hall, Manchester, shortly after his eighth birthday.
He has sung and played under the watchful eye of many fine musicians and Dennis says his qualifications come from having trained with the best. He has toured both as performer and as director with both bands and choirs and he has a wealth of knowledge in the art of choral singing.
Dennis is a renowned vocal coach with many years’ experience of working with individuals, choirs and groups of all ages. His ability to turn the ordinary into something spectacular, and his vast knowledge and experience have benefited many, some of whom now enjoy professional success on the West End stage. He is much sought after as a choral director and has had outstanding success in this field, both in the U.K. and in Europe. In 2003 Dennis was honoured to receive the trophy for outstanding Musical Director at the prestigious Prague International Music Festival.
Dennis is now Principal Conductor and Director of Music of this well established male voice choir and is committed to ensuring that the wonderful tradition of male voice singing continues to evolve in the 21st century and provide an exciting platform for the polished performance of vibrant music which will leave audiences wanting more.
Dennis and his wife, Helen, now run their own vocal coaching business, Sing Aloud, and his long association with music-making continues.
Dennis is ably supported in his work at Tideswell by our Accompanist, Christopher Ellis.
