Ken Gilliver
Second Tenor

Ken Gilliver

Ken was born in 1935 in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, to a tradition of church organ playing.

His family moved to southeast London during the war, and then to Halifax in 1948 because his father worked as an architect in local government. They then moved to Esher where Ken started work as an apprentice toolmaker and design engineer.

During this time Ken spent five years in the chorus of the London Scout Gang Show.

1960 was an eventful year for Ken; he was married and moved to Camberley, and he started his own design company which he worked with for 32 years. He joined a church choir and sang both tenor and bass until 1985, when the Caravan Club claimed his allegiance with its many weekends away.

The move to Derbyshire came in 1993. He has since worked in engineering design, mainly car body tooling but latterly designing control boxes for the oil industry. He joined the Bakewell Methodist church choir in 2003 as a tenor, and still sings with them.

Ken says he really enjoys singing with the Tideswell Male Voice Choir, whose musical director Dennis Kay has a very positive approach which instills confidence in the choir. He also enjoys swimming and playing golf – poorly, he says.
