Come and Join Us

We sing in some lovely places

This is a view of the Minack Theatre near Land’s End,
where we sang a concert in May 2009.

Singing in a choir is not just about singing; it involves travel, companionship, musical education, excitement, challenge and opportunity. Tideswell Male Voice Choir have travelled to several countries as well as around our own islands, have performed alongside some of the greatest names and have an active programme for this year and the future. We’d like to welcome you as a member of the choir so that you can share the thrills and the sense of achievement with us, as well as the fun and laughter, but most of all the deep satisfaction of having made real music with real friends, and of being rewarded with the smiles and applause of an audience – not to mention the occasional standing ovation!

The choir numbered about 45 until November 2010, when we were joined by 20 or so men from the Come and Sing! project; we are always delighted to welcome new members. The men of Tideswell MVC are ordinary men from all walks of life, and although several of us live in and around the village, others come from as far away as Sheffield and Greater Manchester. We work together, we play together and we support one another in daily life as well as during choral events. We enjoy real comradeship. Singing with us you will find that you learn to read music without ever realising you have learnt, and you can improve your voice and your style of presentation under the baton of our phenomenally talented Musical Director. Not only is Dennis a widely experienced choirmaster, he’s also a first-class singing teacher. We’re on the up and up!

There’s no need to feel apprehensive, or unsure of your singing experience—we have men who’ve been singing since they were toddlers (that’s quite a long time in some cases!) and others who’d never sung before they joined us. Whatever your experience, we can find your talent and develop it!

Rehearsals are intense but leavened with humour; they take place each Tuesday evening from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in our own headquarters building: the Old Grammar School, which is just behind Tideswell Parish Church. An additional practice is run on a Wednesday evening (same time and place) for those who’d like more practice time, and personal tuition can also be arranged. After practice, having worked up a thirst, many members visit the local pub for a drink and a social chat. This is just the start though—the choir has many other social activities too.

Why not come along and take a look at the choir on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening? Introduce yourself to any member and we can assure you of a warm and friendly welcome. All of us were in the same position once!
