On Saturday 24 July (no! – is it mid-summer already?) we put on our annual concert in St John's church, Tideswell (the "Cathedral of the Peak"). It was a sell-out: not a single empty seat was to be found. This year our guests were The Eleven: a chamber orchestra of recorder players from the wilds of Lancashire. They made a quite extraordinary, subtle contrast to our own music, and of course the audience received them warmly.
We also had the privilege of two pieces on the church's fine organ by Mary Cobbold – Mary has played with the choir many times, and her playing was just as fresh as ever. The audience thought so too, to judge by the applause.
Our own performance was close to the best it has ever been: after a bit of work in the first half to win the audience to our cause, in the second half they were ecstatic, with cheers and whistles in the applause for every piece (was there something in the half-time coffee?). We can't claim a standing ovation at the end, as everyone was on their feet already to enter into the spirit of When the Saints. It isn't every day you see an entire audience on its feet, but they were this night. Don't you wish you'd been there? Watch out for next year's concert!
